Carrell is a Bible reader and a library for what you study. This page says what we collect, why, who processes it for us, and how to export or delete it. We don't sell your data, show ads, or use your library to train AI models.
Your account
To sign in we keep your email address, your name if you give one, and how you sign in (a code, a passkey, Apple or Google). Clerk runs sign-in for us.
Your library
Your notes, highlights, bookmarks, recent places, reading position, sermon transcripts, photos you add and the marks you make on them are stored in our database (Convex, in the United States) so they're on all your devices. Bible text and translations stay on your device.
Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by our providers. It is not end-to-end encrypted: searching your library and reading your photos need the text on our servers.
Ask, photos and sermons
- Ask. Your questions, the passages Ask reads and the library items it finds are sent to Anthropic's Claude through Vercel's AI Gateway, with zero data retention: they aren't kept or used for training. Your conversations are saved in your library, under Recents.
- Photos. Photos you add are read by Claude the same way, so their text can be searched and linked to verses.
- Sermons. On the free plan, recordings are transcribed on your device and the audio stays there, except one trial recording, which is uploaded, transcribed and then deleted. With Pro, recordings are uploaded so they're transcribed and kept in your library on every device. Uploaded recordings are transcribed by AssemblyAI, which deletes its copy once the transcript is stored.
- Carrell's own model (beta). If you choose it in Ask, questions go to our own model on Cloudflare instead of Claude. If you rate an answer and choose to share the conversation, we keep that rating and conversation for up to 180 days to improve the model; otherwise only the rating is kept.
Developer waitlist
If you join the waitlist for the Carrell API, we keep the email address you give in our database (Convex) and use it only to tell you about the API. Ask us at hello@carrell.ai to remove it.
Payments
Subscriptions are handled by Stripe (on the web and the Mac) or Apple (in the iPhone app). They give us your subscription's status and dates. We never see your card number.
Licensed translations
When you read a translation provided by API.Bible, the publisher's fair-use reporting receives which chapters were displayed, with an anonymous device identifier, as their license requires.
Logs
Our servers (Cloudflare and Convex) log request identifiers, sizes, timings and errors, never the content of your library or questions. Usage counts (questions asked, photos read) are kept to apply your plan's allowances.
Export and deletion
You can export your library at any time from your account. Deleting an item removes it and its files within 30 days. Deleting your account, in Settings › Account in any Carrell app, permanently removes your library, files, billing records and sign-in, and cancels any open transcription.
Who processes your data
Clerk (sign-in), Convex (database and files), Cloudflare (hosting), Vercel and Anthropic (Ask and photo reading), AssemblyAI (transcription), Stripe and Apple (payments). Each processes data only to provide its service to us.
Children
Carrell isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll say so in the apps before it takes effect. Questions or requests: hello@carrell.ai.
